Hello
Thank
you for visiting my website. My name is Steven Canter and I am
the winemaker and sole employee of Luddite Vineyards. It is my
goal to create wine that not only reflects its origin, but also
gives you a connection to nature’s wisdom. It may seem odd
that a self proclaimed Luddite would even have a website, but
I am of the view that the purpose of Luddism is to resist technology
that is “harmful to the common good” and I’m
not convinced that this is the case here.
I
set about learning my craft by interning with artisan winemakers
who I felt had a unique voice in the wine world. I have been fortunate
to work in Oregon, South Africa, Tuscany, Alto Adige, South Australia
as well as the Napa Valley, Russian River Valley and Amador County.
It was over the course of many years that my ideas of what really
mattered came together. And what matters to me most is how to
work with, rather than fight nature.
My
wines are sourced from organic, biodynamic and transitional vineyards.
Fermented with native wild yeast and bottled without fining or
filtration. The average size of any bottling is less than two
hundred cases and sometimes as few as twenty-five. Because of
my sub-industrial size, it is not possible to maintain a constant
inventory of all my wines. Several times I have made ‘once
only’ bottlings. While some of these may last several months,
others sell out in just weeks. If you are interested in what I
have at any given time, please contact me through the
link on this site and I will forward you notes on the
current releases.
The
wines described on this website are not a comprehensive list.
From late 2004 through 2005 there will be at least seven different
small lots that will not be noted here. I will however send notice
via e-mail or standard post as these wines are released.
